Jeff Grace wins Area Speaking competition

Jeff Grace, President of Eastbourne Speakers Club won the International Speaking competition against stiff competition at the Area finals in Southwick on Saturday 31st March 2012. Five clubs in this area fielded contestants.

Toastmasters world-wide hold two major speaking competitions each year. The "rounds" start at Club level. Jeff won at the club level two weeks ago. Next "round" is at Divisional Level and that will be held at Oxted Community Hall, 53 Church Lane, Oxted, Surrey, RH8 9NB on Saturday 28th April 2012 6pm - 9pm. Visitors are most welcome.

The International Speaking competition is so named because the speech contest goes right up to World Champion level. That is held later in the year in the US. The winner of that is crowned World Champion. The speech may be crafted around any subject the speaker selects and has to be delived in less than 7 minutes and 30 seconds. No subject is "off-limits". Jeff told us about how he was bullied as a child and how his father taught him to box and the profound impact that had. An emotional, meaningful and beautifully delivered speech.

Alongside the Speech competition is the Evaluation contest. Eastbourne's club member Claire Carpenter represented Eastbourne providing an excellent and insightful evaluation of the Target Speech.

The "Target" speech was delivered by Martin Berry an Area Governor and long standing and respected member. Once this is completed the Evaluators are given exactly 5 minutes to prepare. They then deliver their evaluations to the audience in no more than 3 minutes and 30 seconds. The judges award marks for various aspects of the presentation.

The judges awarded first place in the Evaluation competeition to Catherine Canon from the Toastmaster Club based at West Sussex County Council at Chichester.
