Table Topics at Worthing Library

At Worthing Library on Saturday afternoon 21st May 2011 many dedicated Toastmasters gathered to support Meg Heyworth DTM in her drive to "spread the word". The event was designed to increase membership for the newly formed Worthing Speakers Club. A club dedicated to helping the individual improve their public speaking skills.

Meg Heyworth founder of Worthing Speakers giving it her all at Worthing Library6 years ago Meg started Eastbourne Speakers. Now she repeats the challenge to do the same in Worthing.

When Worthing Speakers have 20 members they may formally apply to join the thousands of other Toastmasters clubs world-wide and become an officially chartered club within the International Toastmasters Organisation.

The meeting took place at the invitation of the Library in the main Library building in middle of its ground floor area. The Library is in the centre of Worthing and a total 30 people attended.

Area Governor 32 Governor Division H District 71 Toastmasters International Dec Cluskey ACG, ALS in full flowThis was a very "public" Tables Topics session. Visitors and experienced speakers alike accepted the opportunity to speak impromptu in public for up to 2 minutes. No easy task for anyone.

This was a live example of just one aspect of what goes on in a typical Toastmasters club meeting across the world, one of the tools used to help the individual improve their public speaking skills.

Meg opened the proceedings and then handed over to Barry Miles as Topics Master for the first topics session. Barry spotted a likely candidate to get the ball rolling in Dec Cluskey. He briefly left his post as 'people gatherer' [gathering every unsuspecting visitor to the Library that day] and gave an impromptu two minutes on 'Luck'. Not needed for success in the Music Industry, according to Dec.

Division H Governor District 71Toastmasters International Gordon Piggott CC giving a wonderful demonstration of the art of 'Evaluation' - the great tool in Speakers meetingsAssisting Meg running the afternoon sessions were Barry Miles and David West. Gordon Piggott and Dorothy Margison both provided demonstrations of what to expect from evaluations.

The meeting started exactly at 2pm and ended precisely at 4pm. There was a good flow of guests and all showed enthusiasm for a Speakers Club in Worthing. This was a lot of fun for all and a good opportunity to experience what Worthing Speakers has to offer.

Toastmaster meetings in public are rare. With the success of this meeting, and a recent similar meeting at Lewisham Library in South London, it is likely we shall see more of them.
